Ways to Measure Core Body Temperature
There are several methods to measure core body temperature, each with trade-offs:
Pulmonary Artery Catheterization
“Hospital-only, highly invasive.”
A sensor is placed inside a major artery near the heart—extremely accurate, but only used in critical care settings like the ICU.
Rectal Thermometry
“Accurate but awkward.”
A thermometer is inserted into the rectum. It gives very reliable core temperature readings, especially during and after intense activity, but it’s not practical or comfortable for everyday use.
Esophageal Thermometry
“Tube down your throat.”
A sensor is passed through the nose or mouth into the esophagus. It tracks temperature near the heart but is uncomfortable and usually used only in clinical or research settings.
Ingestible Sensors (Pills)
“Swallow it, track it.”
A pill with a tiny sensor is swallowed. It sends your internal temperature wirelessly for several hours. It’s accurate, but single-use and expensive.
Tympanic (Ear) Thermometers
“Quick but tricky.”
These take temperature inside the ear canal. They’re fast and non-invasive but can be thrown off by earwax, improper placement, or even outside temperature.
Oral and Axillary (Underarm) Thermometers
“Easy but not core.”
These are common at home. They’re simple to use, but they measure surface temperature, not internal—so they’re not reliable for true core readings.
Why Comparing Methods Is Challenging
Your body doesn’t maintain a uniform temperature. Readings differ depending on the site—rectal vs. oral vs. skin can all vary substantially. Even “gold standard” methods can yield different values, which makes comparisons inherently complex.
Additionally, non-invasive tools are held to unrealistic standards. Many studies use a ±0.3°C threshold for “validity”—but that’s the level of precision achieved by top clinical thermometers in perfectly stable environments.
